Soft Starters

Since the first electric motors appeared the engineers have been looking for the ways to escape from the electrical and mechanical problems while using Direct-on-line (Direct) and Star-Delta starters.  ABB has been manufacturing soft starters since the beginning of 1980s.  The experience obtained since the beginning of the 1980s is being used in today’s design of the series. ABB, with its latest product series called PST has been one step ahead in the soft starter technology. When combines with the smart circuit structure of the modern power electronics and the software the new PST soft starters provide the control of the current and the voltage electronically in an excellent way while the motor is being enabled as well as the various new design features.

SOFT STARTERS

This solution addresses to both mechanical and the electrical problems.

Called the locomotive of the industry and used in the operation of fans, grinding machines, driving machines, pumps, conveyor belts etc AC motors have been causing the unwanted load increase in manufacturing plants throughout the world.  This type of hard starters causes damage in various ways. Some of them are as follows:

• * The electrical problems depending on the temporary voltage and currents resulting from the starting     operations of Direct and Star-Delta. This type of temporary current and voltages may over feed the local feeding network and may cause unacceptable voltage fluctuations that may affect some electrical equipments connected to the network.
• * Mechanical problems drifting all driving chains to extreme voltages to the equipments started form the motor. 
• * The pressure fluctuations in pie lines, the damaging of the products on the conveyors belts and the management problems such as the operation of the elevators in a disturbing way. This situation also leads to extremely significant financial results. All technical problems and technical breakdowns-due to the repair and manufacturing loss-will lead to various costs.
  
  The easiest solution to the said problems is to use PSS or PST type ABB soft starter. Starting and stopping operation can carried out without a problem while the ABB soft starters and the mechanical and the electrical voltages are kept in the lowest level.
